Squeezed in between the two kingdoms of Nepal and Bhutan, the
Sikkim- Darjeeling region is a geographical wonderland. The
Khang-chen-dzonga (world’s 3rd highest peak) dominates both the
thoughtscape and the landscape of Sikkim. The state has an
amazing bio-diversity; its chief wealth being its flowers
orchids, rhododendrons, magnolias, poppies, primulas. Sikkim
enjoys an uncannily tropical climate in lower reaches having a
variety of flowers, forests, birds and the butterflies.
Darjeeling
Darjeeling, a former British hill station is also known as the
Queen of the Himalayas’. Built on a narrow ridge jutting out
into the Teesta basin, it looks across a wide expanse, to
Himalayan peaks which stretch along the northern horizon. The
tea gardens and the toy train just add to the whole atmosphere
of the area.
Sikkim
Having people from different ethnic groups Buddhism is a
tangible presence here, its symbols seen everywhere. White
prayer flags fluttering in the wind; boy-monks in maroon
scampering on the streets, and gaudily painted monasteries
splendid in their isolation.
Goecha La Trek.
For the people of Sikkim, Kanchenjunga is more than just the
third highest peak in the world; it is believed to be the abode
of the state’s patron diety. This trek takes one right up close
to the big mountain, through forests of rhododendrons, orchids,
pine and magnolia. to the higher valleys and the rolling meadows
used for grazing by the gentle yak-herding Lepchas.
